I regret to report that I only learned today of the sad death of Prof Oswald Hanfling last Tuesday (25/10/05). Just the night before he'd been contributing fully to the Oxford Moral Philosophy Seminar. His presence will be missed.
I have just learnt of his death. I met him only once, but, as a student of the Open University's Wittgenstein course of the early 1970s, I admired him immensely for the clarity of his written material. While some writers of the course were prone to fudging issues, Hanfling was crystal clear. He seemed a delightfully modest man, as well.
